How does diet affect our eyes?

Stop oxidisation

The retinal photoreceptors and neurons consume an awful lot of energy carrying out their normal function. When a large amount of energy is used, tissues produce what’s known as the free radicles that literally “rust” everything away. To combat this our body uses anti-oxidant to neutralise these free radicles. Unfortunately, anti-oxidants generally can’t be synthesised by the body and require frequent replenishment from outside sources.

Reduce inflammation

Inflammation response is our body’s way to fight off invading organisms and/or repair damaged tissues (damage either by organise or oxidization stress)

Intense and prolonged inflammation can cause tissue damage. Many foods have anti-inflammatory property usually contain a high concentration of Omega-3, vitamin C and anti-oxidants.

You are what you eat

General conditions that can cause damages to the eyes include diabetes (through damage to the capillaries), high blood pressure (arteriosclerosis) and high cholesterol (Atherosclerosis). These changes can permanently and irreversibly damage all layers of the eyes. As the majority of these diseases are caused by processed foods, vision loss is therefore completely preventable through better management of diet and medications.
